Antisemitism and the Ease (Luxury?) of Being a Bystander

Last night I was at a gathering at the home of my best friend and her husband. We were playing the game Fibbage, in which players fill in the blank in trivia questions in the hope of guessing the correct answer and tricking other players into thinking that their answer is correct. One of the questions was basically, "This 2007 book gained notoriety with the violent title "Kill the ___." Obviously, nothing that comes after that was good. One answer was "Kill the kids," another was "Kill the baby," and I personally put "Kill the bitch" (yikes). All to be expected. What I did not expect was that one of the answers would be "Kill the Jew." I didn't initially see the word "Jew" sitting up there with all the equally violent but less genocidal options, but once I did see it, the damage could not be undone. Fibbage lets you see who wrote each answer after the round ends. I was not surprised to see that my friend's h...

On writing

I'm extremely reticent about sharing my writing, but I am compelled to do so because it is becoming so common place.  I might as well bite the bullet and share my writing with the world. I do have dreams about becoming a published author someday, and I'm never going to realize that dream by simply writing in my journal. I guess my struggle is that I haven't found that "story" that I want to write. Almost everything that inspires me to write is autobiographical, or at least related to someone I know (my best friend, Nina, is a big muse of mine). I've never conceptualized a fictional character whose story really compels me to continue writing. I love fiction, but maybe I am not a fiction writer. Which is why I decided to try blogging. I may not be able to write fiction, but I do love to write. Does anyone else get that feeling in their stomach, in their guts, telling them that they have a feeling that they need to commit to paper? That's what tells me wh...

Welcome!

Hello all! Welcome to my blog. This is going to be mostly personally musings and reflections. I hope to tackle the questions that intrigue me and gain some feedback from you, readers. Mostly I love to write and am hoping to take the first dive into writing for an audience, rather than my journal. A bit about me: I am a 27 year old, 4th year teacher who works in Chicago but lives in the suburbs. I am about to take the leap of moving in with my boyfriend of four years- yeah, we've taken it really slow. I have a dog named Evie and two cats named Pepito and Bella (they're siblings). I love sunshine, water (the lake is everything), being outdoors, reading, writing, and dancing. I live for reggaeton. I am bilingual, English/Spanish. That's pretty much your need to know information. Happy reading! :) Love, Darcy
